Gertie was simply a computer program that was augmented a few times. Eventually her A.I. gained a certain kind of sentience before taking over and augmenting herself. Sarcasm and humor were a couple of the things she's added over time to make herself seem (or maybe even feel) more human.

That's not to say she's good at humor. But then that's also pretty human.

Well that's one way to deal with snarky AIs. Although a nice, new ramming prow would look quite nice. Reinforced structure across the entire ship, immense engine, acceleration boost. . . yeah, unless a ship is actually armored so expensively as to take a small ship sized bullet it might be split in half with minimal effort. And we already have a great accelerator, albeit on the wrong end. now to just magic up the rest.
