The fun of writing this comic is that random crap comes up in my head as I write and I can follow wherever it leads. And yet, sometimes I write the story out and find "you know, hey, this plotline has a flaw. How do I fix that." And, as a rule, the best thing to do is go big. Literally. So, you know, big trees.

Almost as if I planned it...

Mon, 18 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3060: Practical Thaumaturgy https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/15

This comic serves absolutely no purpose except to let the relationship between Katrina and Claudette thaw a little. They can actually bond a bit over magic and not be at each other's throats the whole time. It's nice.

Plus, they're just a couple of big old magic nerds. NEEEEEEEEERDS!

Fri, 15 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3059: To Use a Statue https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/14

This also makes sense when you put it into the context of what we know of Evil Katrina's plan. Of course, the heroes have no clue what he plan is or what's really going on, so they have to sound it out for a while as we snicker at them from behind our hands. This is the problem with knowing more of the plot than our characters -- we know it, but they don't, so they have to stumble through the mystery blindly, and thus it's perfectly natural for the characters to have conversations just trying to figure out what the fuck is going on.

Thu, 14 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3058: Wide Open Spaces https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/13

I actually have something for this, a way to prove just how advanced this culture is despite all evidence to the contrary. He'd want to know all about this statue just so he can appreciate its artistry.

Mon, 11 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3055: Exactly https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/08

I'm not really sure what his plan was. If the bird-bears don't trust him because one Katrina is with them, wouldn't two be even worse? I'd think so. Still, I need both of them on the planet and this was an easy way to get them there (since they didn't both go to the planet to begin with because... reasons? I really needed to think this through better).

Fri, 08 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3054: Really, Really Big https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/07

We do not have transporters in this universe. Angel is the closest thing we have, and as we just recently discussed, I can't remember half the time that he has that power. In all other instances, people have to physically travel through space. Thus why they still use fighters, transporters, shuttles and, in the case of Claudette, just fly through the vacuum themselves. It's the only way they have to get around.

Thu, 07 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3053: Just Because https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/06

I hung him upside down because it was funny. I really don't need any more reason than that. Of course, I then forgot he could go into mist form for a few comics because he hasn't had that power back for very long. Plus, it's like Angel's portal power -- I only remember it when I absolutely need it and then, otherwise, I got out of my way to actively forget it exists.

Bat form might have worked in this instance, too, although I have a feeling he would have just ended up tangled in the vines even worse than before.

Wed, 06 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3052: Blood Rush https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/05

Darkmoon really can't defend himself here. He's already proven (in the last 52 comics) that he neither had much to do nor is he a very busy or important person. He should have done more work beforehand if he wanted to be able to take the high road.

Tue, 05 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3051: The Morning After https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/04

We joke about Darkmoon sleeping in coffins from time to time. Dracula still sleeps in a coffin, and it is the traditional sleeping arrangement for vampires (in no small part because they block out sunlight quite effectively). Darkmoon, though, has a bed. In every version of his room/place/house I've put together, he's always had a bed. There's no reason for him to sleep in a coffin since he doesn't have to worry about the daylight. Comfort wins out over tradition.

Mon, 04 Jun 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3050: Damn It, Barry! https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/06/01

Gas, like this is surprisingly easy to draw. I almost made a deleted scene about this but I couldn't figure out a punchline. Still, aliens speak English, or really, more accurately, they speak Galactic Common which is, in essence, English. That's mostly because I speak English and, aside from the occasional Google Translate for humorously bad translations, this comic is written in English. If we were really thinking of the languages humans would use if they spread across the galaxy, it would be a mix of English, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish as those are the three most common languages spoken across our planet currently. Those three would mix and mingle on the various planets, sprouting new offshoot dialects, which would themselves mix and mingle as travelers went from place to place, until we ended up with a weird, homogenized dialect that really didn't sound like any one language.

But for the sake of the comic, English is Galactic Common.

Thu, 31 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3048: Suddenly! https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/30

And here we have a Vulcan (no, not those ones). We'll see more of them in this plotline, but this was a good quick little intro for them. They... well, they're not humans. Like at all. It's fun to play with alien forms.

Wed, 30 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3047: Going Downtown... https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/29

I'm assuming the ship has some kind of field that keeps the air in the ship when the bay doors are open but allows ships and such to exit freely. I think ships in Star Trek have something like that and it makes a certain amount of sense. Keeps all the air from escaping.

Tue, 29 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3046: Take a Ride https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/28

Magic. Gas. Nuclear power. Actually, that last one might not be such a good idea, although it's probably also the most realistic. The thought of traveling through space on an atomic bomb, one that could set off from a tiny meteorite smashing through the hull at several thousand kilometers per second, doesn't exactly sound like a great plan to me.

Mon, 28 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3045: Team at the Ready https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/25

Katrina is scary. This allows her to be a presence off the ship, making her a more real character.

It's worth noting that all the rooms and doors on the ship are pretty big. This is because Golem is pretty damn big (the tallest character in the series with the current art-style) and everything has to be able to accommodate his size. If he can't get through a door, that's a problem.

Thu, 24 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3043: Technically Correct https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/23

Pluto is a planet and I don't care what anyone says. It's big (in comparison to me, or a cat, or a breadbox), it's round, and it goes around the sun in a elliptical orbit. The captain, by regulation, is required to stay with their ship and lead everything. Of course, this ship barely has regulations, and it has two captains, so I'm sure we can spare one of them for an away mission. Sounds like a problem that solves itself.

Tue, 22 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3041: The Better Captain https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/21

I won't pretend I'm a military person. As I've noted before, my experience with the military is limited to movies and TV shows, and mostly Star Trek. I have been reading a bit of military fiction, though, and one of the things some of the better commanders do in those books is to travel the ship regularly, make their presence known, and assure the crew that everything is going to plan (no matter how far off the rails everything actually is). A calm, steady crew that sees their commander functions better.

Of course, most of the time Darkmoon is walking the ship, talking to people, it's probably so he can get directions back to the bridge.

Wow, we've had a few "deleted scenes" lately. This one definitely didn't fit into the flow of this comic leading into the next one, but I had this stupid bit of dialogue come up in my head and I wanted to make it happen. I swear, when I named the system Hephaestus, I totally, wasn't thinking of the fact that his Roman name was Vulcan. But once it came time to name a planet, I remembered it, and that was all it took.

Those who are fans of astronomy may remember that it was theorized there was a planet within the orbit of Mercury. That planet was called Vulcan back when it was suggested it existed but, alas, it never did. Of course, that's surely the reason why the name Vulcan was used for the fictional planet in Star Trek.

Although I'm sure two planets can't have the same name for real, if any were going to, I'm sure Vulcan would be one of those names we used again and again. And every time the person would think they were being just so clever. Which they weren't.

Damn it, I think I just dissed myself.

Mon, 21 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - Chapter Two: Dark Deeds for Good Reasons https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/20

It's fun making weird variants of sprites. Starting this game, I didn't expect to make new, future versions of the Evil Katrina, but since I decided to do these little sprite-based mini comics, that's exactly what I got to do. Rift Wars had the death of Evil Darkmoon, so clearly these ladies are either looking to resurrect him, or Dracula, or some combination of the two. And apparently they're getting pretty close. That should set some pretty good stakes, eh?

That or they'll make a band. But I kind of already did that storyline...

Fri, 18 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3039: A Moment with the Villains https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/17

I figured it was high time we spent at least a scene with the villains of this piece. As much as we were setting up Dracula to be the villain at the start, this story is clearly all about the Mirror villains. So we need to give them their due.

The designs for Evil Katrina and Isbella (who we'll see in the next comic) are a lot like their designs from CVRPG 2499 (in the few moments we saw them). I didn't feel as great a need to redesign their costumes since we hadn't had a lot of time to get bored of their previous costumes (maybe that was just me).

Thu, 17 May 2018 00:00:00 -0400 CVRPG - #3038: Set in Motion https://www.cvrpg.com//archive/comic/2018/05/16

Hey, when the captain tells you to do something, you do it.
