Katrina did warn her. This is what happens when you unleash an untrained wild mage. Big effects, but it may not be exactly what you want (as in the case of the black hole). Still, in the short term she is proving quite effective.

To be fair, I'm not sure how one would destroy a squadron of space ships WITHOUT leaving a debris field.

vaporizing the metal would be one possibility.
although that might just leave a cloud of much smaller debris or one large chunk, I will admit I am not too sure how that sort of thing would work (the ships in old space movies explode from something like the reactor going critical anyways.)
