#468: Up In the Clouds

This is one of those things I always wonder about whenever a floating island city is shown in a game or movie. They never show farmland on the island, so food has to be transported up somehow. Presumably water, too, since there isn't going to be a huge source of freshwater lakes on the island -- especially if the island is designed like most are in popular media, with a river running off one of both sides of the island.

Where does all that water come from? How can it keep flowing off the island and never stop? If that river is fed from rain, the riverbed should dry out pretty quickly once the rain stops.

Of course, most of the time then the lower continents, the ones stuck on the face of the planet (how passe), are usually wastelands. And if that's the case, then resources are even more scarce, so it really makes you wonder where all the food, water, and magical resources are coming from.

Flaws, people! Flaws!

If the setting has magic in it the water could be arriving there by magical means. I have played a couple of games that had a mystical artifact that seemed capable of creating an endless stream of water. Legaia 2: Duel Saga is one such title. Scale the artifact up till it generates a large river or two and there's your answer for the water on the floating land. In a setting that doesn't have magic I agree that it doesn't make any sense.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
