#493: Don't Push Too Hard

This Comic's Storylines:

This Comic's Cast:

Whenever I ran a game of D&D I loved screwing around with the conventions of the game. Why can't an ogre cast magic? Why do dragons have to be giant creatures? Shouldn't vampire be able to all kinds of weird, dark magics?

Have a vampire turn into a flock of bats seemed so cool and new when I wrote this, but then I read some Discworld books and realized Terry Pratchett did it first. Damn it.

I don't think Terry Pratchett actually did it first, but I've only read a couple of the Discworld novels. I do know that I've seen animes (yes, more than one) that are older than your comic (at least one of them by a decade) that do it, as well as other fiction sources that are even older that had vampires turning into multiple bats. It's not even remotely new, and it seems to me that I have played an RPG that also did the stunt that is somewhat up there in age (Shadow Hearts did it as well, PS2, 2001 copyright date).

Well, by "first" I really meant "before me", but I concede your point.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
