Just because he has a soul doesn't mean he has to use it.
The nod towards darkness was just to show time progressing. It's difficult in a comic, such as this, to show the passing of time since all the sprite sheets are colored for daytime (or the occasional nighttime maps, but they're rare and I try not to overuse them). Any time I end up in a nighttime location, I tend to try to explain it (or at least make a nod at how long the heroes have been traveling).
Maybe it's unnecessary, but I feel like it helps the continuity of the comic. And I'm an absolute continuity-whore.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
