What they need is a Darkmoon around to suggest a stupid, crazy idea. Then they will all say "no, that's stupid and crazy," while at the same time realizing there's probably a basic nugget of truth to the plan, and using that information to create a real plan.
Or, the other thing a Darkmoon would do is ignore any plan because, inherently, it's going to fail anyway (given the track record of these heroes), and just barge right in, swords blazing (since we don't have guns).
