Of course, the primary goal of the story was to explain why Golem looks so different. Here we're able to quickly gloss over it in a convincing way without having to dwell for very long on the details.
And it gave me a chance to redesign Golem and make him awesome looking. Or, as it turned out, make him look kind of like Mega Man.
