So, in a sense, Darkmoon knew he'd fight Future Darkmoon, and that Future Darkmoon would die. That's how the fates had to play out, and there was nothing he could do about it.
Thus, when Past Darkmoon became Future Darkmoon, he allowed himself to be killed by Past Darkmoon, completing the loop.
