The myths about leprechauns do indicate that they give out wishes if you catch them. They're less clear, though, on whether the wishes are like with the wishes from a monkey's paw -- you get what you wish for, but not necessarily what you wanted.
Certainly, after watching a few of the Leprechaun movies, I wouldn't want to mess around with these fairy folk. Or watch any more Leprechaun movies. Two valuable lessons there.
