#1367: First Wave Ready

This Comic's Storylines:

And with the comment of "the first wave of demons" this seems like a good time to discuss my inspiration for Rift Wars:

Firstly, I wanted a world where I could just screw around with conventions. As you'll see going forward, there will be many times where I mess with the rules of how a story like this is supposed to work. This is how I've been known to run RPG games in the past -- people get comfortable with tropes, so I like to turn story conventions on their heads.

But, along with that, I decided I also wanted to do an homage to Gauntlet, the great arcade series. Here we have four heroes (ignoring bat Darkmoon) of four colors: Evil Darkmoon (Red), Samus (Yellow), Richter (Blue), and Princess (Green when she's in her monk outfit). We also have four classes represented: Warrior (Richter), Valkyrie (Samus), Wizard (Evil Darkmoon), and Thief (Princess).

Admittedly it doesn't line up one-to-one with the original version of Gauntlet. True, Thief was never a class in the series -- they always went with Elf instead, which is more a race than a class. And the first version of Gauntlet had set color/class combination -- Red Warrior, Yellow Valkyrie, Green Elf, Blue Wizard, so those are off in this version... although that's just because I don't have characters that line up one-to-one with the original Gauntlet.

Well, sorta. Katrina is purple, not blue, but it would have kinda worked. And Link is an elf, of a sort, and he can wear green (although he's been in Red for a while). Darkmoon isn't really a warrior, though, so calling him the Red Warrior is a push.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
