#1374: So Many

This Comic's Storylines:

This Comic's Cast:

Samus has fought Kraid three times -- Metroid, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion -- with maybe a few more I don't know about. In at least one of those instances he was a genetic/cybernetic/whatever resuscitation of Kraid, so he has officially died at least once.

Of course, Metroid Fusion comes after this version of Samus (presumably), so she may still not have killed him by this point in her timeline (whenever this part of her history takes place).

While I hesitate to be ‘that guy’, as someone who’s been an avid fan of Metroid since the NES entered my childhood I feel honor-bound to point out that Kraid never appeared (nor was slated to, to my reading) in Metroid Fusion. Additionally, he has yet to have any appearances where he was resuscitated with cybernetics, unlike his infamous cohort, Ridley. Possibly you were thinking of them, and/or that he appeared in the somewhat similar Zero Mission, but that’s just Metroid redux. Interestingly enough, there was plans for Kraid to appear in the Phazon Mines of Metroid Prime, and was fully modeled for the project. However, he was not as extensively modified as Ridley, with the only major visible modification being some advanced headgear meant to keep his face shielded. Design plans indicate the player would have had to destroy this by causing environmental features to crash into it, and then attempt damage while navigating platforms to gain enough height to attack. He would also be disrupting said platforms in addition to projectiles and other attacks. Alas, the didn’t have enough development time to flesh out the battle and smooth it out into something that would be engaging to play so it was cut. There was also a cut scene where a weaponized Kraid or a creature much like him would have appeared in the opening battle of Corruption, and get gunned down by her Gunship. Neat stuff from the cutting room floor. In many ways, I’m grateful Kraid has only had two encounters with Samus to date. Ridley is thrown back into the games almost obsessively, to the point where his absence in Return of Samus/AM2R and Prime 2 is something of a welcome reprieve. He’s a fan favorite sure, but Samus doesn’t NEED Ridley to have an engaging sci-fi adventure, and the more he appears the more token and unintimidating he becomes. I give Fusion a sorta pass as it’s just X-parasites mimicking DNA from remains studied there, but they could stand to give it a rest. He’s bordering on Sigma territory. The appearance in Samus Returns recently is a good fight, and vaguely fits as ‘foreshadowing’ Super Metroid, but wasn’t really necessary. (I kinda woulda liked the peaceful reflection at the end of 2 to be left alone personally.) And... well, gameplay aside, his appearance in Other M was embarrassing by relation to the directors need to shoehorn his backstory comic into a point in the timeline when Samus would have long overcome her trauma. But the game obsessively fanserviced bosses as much as it could - hey look, Phantoon and Nightmare are here too, what a family reunion! Never mind it makes no sense and we could have done something new, just shoot away! Ugh. The combat is the only good thing about that game. I rather hope Retro strongly considers leaving Ridley out of Prime 4 without a dang good reason, or maybe just a background character to foreshadow a new plot. But inversely, this might be a great time to finally realize a new battle with Kraid. Here’s hoping.

Those are all fair points. Still works within the bounds of the comic itself, though.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
