Admittedly I'm kind of cribbing a trick from Chrono Trigger. In that game you get an item that has to be charged for years upon years in sunlight. So you place the item in the distant past and them retrieve it from the distant future, fully charged and ready to go.
Theoretically Alec could do the same thing with the sword if he had some safe place to put it.
