I hung him upside down because it was funny. I really don't need any more reason than that. Of course, I then forgot he could go into mist form for a few comics because he hasn't had that power back for very long. Plus, it's like Angel's portal power -- I only remember it when I absolutely need it and then, otherwise, I got out of my way to actively forget it exists.
Bat form might have worked in this instance, too, although I have a feeling he would have just ended up tangled in the vines even worse than before.
