#2758: Bending Space

This Comic's Storylines:

Achievement Unlocked!

As with the previous comic, where I tried to work as much science as I could into the layout of the galaxy, I similarly tried to keep the discussion as scientifically accurate as I (an artist with only a passing understanding of the physics) could. In this case, the basics of the approach to space travel (at faster than light speeds) is true... to a certain point.

Constant acceleration could get a space ship up to pretty fast speeds, although relativity dictates (in theory) that you still can't go faster than light. I sci-fied it a bit, though, and assumed that maybe, somehow, at faster speeds (approaching light speed) space gets weird and handwave, handwave, you can get going fast enough to go interplanetary with much shorter time spans than we're currently able. That's the less accurate part.

What is more accurate (surprisingly, since it's the Star Trek answer) is that you can create a bubble of warped space (in theory) to travel faster than light. How it works would be that you can't go faster than light -- relativity says so. But space isn't limited like we are. Space can go faster than light, so all you have to do is create a bubble where at the edges space is going faster but, inside, you're traveling at normal speeds. As noted in the comic, though, the energy required to do that is, right now, beyond our capabilities.

Which is why we have magic in the comic. When you need to get around the limits of science, always rely on magic.

Wait, why does it say Princess? Isn't she long dead?

You know... I JUST realized this but the Siren now reminds me of the ships in 'Treasure Planet'

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
