Question #4: Do It Better

The "Other Heroes" arc happened 3900 comics ago, close to 18 years back, and it's the biggest flaw in the series, in my opinion. Just a short batch of comics that go nowhere and really fail to do anything. That was a bit of a learning experience for me there, realizing that not every weird little idea I come up with has to be explored. Where I to redo the comic from scratch, the Other Heroes arc would have gone into the Abandoned Comics listing, never to be seen again.

On the matter of Year One, yeah... okay, so I likely should have done that first. It doesn't feel like as big of a regret because I think the Year One arc does cover for it. For flow it would have been better to do Year One first, to retell the story of the RPG so everyone was up to speed. I tried to handle it differently by filling in the stories of the heroes as we went along, but I know some early fans really wanted to know more about the characters than I initially doled out, and that was why I had to do Year One after. Hindsight being what it was...

My biggest regret with Gaiden is simply that the guy that wanted to do the game with me dropped off the face of the planet and that never happened. I would have loved to have actually had the comic and the game telling two versions of the same story, and if the game had happened it would have allowed me to finish the art for the comic way ahead of time. It would have been a win-win. Oh well.

I...didn't think the "Other Heroes" arc was bad. I can see why it was abandoned, but it definitely fit early CVRPG when there was a greater focus of game satire and the main heroes weren't the best at what they did. All in all, it shows your growth as a writer, so it's not a mistake.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
